The new Redmi Note 9 Pro has offered massive upgrades in multiple areas that matter to regular phone users bigger battery, better design, better build quality, bigger display, and more importantly, a more affordable price tag. Xiaomi also has a Redmi Note 9 Pro Max this year but that phone is meant for those who want some more.
For most people, the Redmi Note 9 Pro makes more sense than ever, at least on paper. But the market is afloat with phones at similar prices that may have an edge or two in some areas. Hence, if you are in the market for a new smartphone, choosing between these might be tough. How does the Redmi Note 9 Pro make a case for itself in this list?
Xiaomi upped the design and build quality last year with the Redmi Note 7 Pro last year. With the Redmi Note 9 Pro, it has only improved. The Note 9 Pro is now bigger and commands a presence that only a few expensive phones can demand in the market. The Redmi Note 8 Pro got bigger due to a bigger display. The Note 9 Pro is bigger by a few millimetres and has also grown thicker substantially thicker. It has also grown heavier -- the Note 9 Pro weighs grams. The new model packs a mAh battery and that alone increases the weight by some margin. To mask the bulk of the big battery, Xiaomi has cleverly designed the rest of the phone.
The rear panel curves on its edges and this makes it easy to hold the phone. The plastic frame has a matte finish that aides with in-hand grip. The weight has also been balanced evenly for better comfort.
Like most reviewers, Xiaomi sent me the Aurora Blue variant and this looks stunning under any lighting. The gradient is subtle and I am glad Xiaomi did not go for a highly reflective pattern similar to the Realme phones subtle colour gradients look civilised. I can comfortably use the Note 9 Pro in my office and at a party alike, and no one, I think, would comment on my fashion choices.
What I am still sceptical of is the rectangular camera hump that looks weird. The black patch below the camera hump with the 48MP branding looks awkward. Similar to the rear, the front of the phone also feels upmarket.
The best big smartphone with a stylus
The phone still uses an LCD display but the bezels are narrow and thanks to the punch-hole cutout positioned in the center, it looks more expensive. The chin is still noticeable and looks ugly but given the price, this is something we have to put up with. The fingerprint sensor sits on the power button and similar to the Poco X2, it is slightly difficult to reach for smaller hands. The volume buttons are positioned too high even for larger hands.
Overall conclusions? The Redmi Note 9 Pro feels more upmarket than it is and due to the added weight, some may be more confident in using it outdoors. However, the grams weight is a concern for users with smaller hands and I wish Xiaomi found a way to keep the weight under check. Cheaper phones are getting better and one area where that improvement is visible is the display.
Sadly, the wait continues.

The display on the Redmi Note 9 Pro is a massive one it measures 6. Who knew you needed a phone with more iris scanners, fingerprint detectors, and more hi-tech security doodads than an average James Bond film, until phone manufacturers told you that you did? Who knew you needed a curved screen that wraps round the corners but doesn't really do much with it, until phone manufacterers told you that you did? Who knew you needed a phone that you could go scuba diving with, until phone manufacturers told you that you did?
I'm still a holdout for the return of removable batteries in the Note line, however much of a pipe dream that might be. In fact it seems to be getting worse, with Samsung's 'productivity' flagship having worse battery life than it's Trendy hipster flagship? Although there's little massive difference anymore.

One has a pen. That's it. I still use the pen in my Note 4. It's the main reason I chose it when I replaced my Nokia - to use as a digital pocket sketchbook when I'm out and about. Recently I had a hiccup transferring it to another wifi source, leaving it unconnected and uncontrollable. Good thing I could simply add it as an IR device on the Sure app within a few seconds! I've tried everything possible in settings to have it work and failed. Can someone help please? I really don't think this phone will fail. No way. Consumer's have been waiting too long for the note. Yes, the price is steep but with carrier financing it won't stop anyone. There is no other phone on the market that has It's premium features! Everyone complains it's too expensive. So what, spoil yourself once in awhile.

Lol, the headline in this translation from the German version is more "stupid" sorry, no other word makes sense for me than the one in German language. Yes, their might be people who "need" this smartphone, but I am not sure if this will be a hit at the price point it has at the start, because nothing really new is in and on it Design-wise this phone is a big failure for me and I am doubtful whether this design will match the former user of Note-phones Ridiculous price.

The "telephoto zoom" lens is neither "telephoto" nor "zoom". Zoom might be done by the software, not the lens - as far as I understand it's got a fixed focal lens.
