It is believed that the success of their new messaging apps , Allo and Duo is forcing Google to power off the Hangouts platform. Google was asked several times about the future of the app recently but their reply was not much satisfying. They also sent emails to those developers who are still using Hangouts API. As per the reports, Hangouts will not available after April 25 th this year. But, there are some exceptions to this cutoff. DialPad and RingCentral are the two Hangouts apps that are excluded from the shutdown. Both of them will be available even after April 25 th , along with Slack and Hangouts on Air integration.

I guess, Google made the correct decision. Why didn't Google go the Windows way? Microsoft decided to have Windows 10 as their last Windows OS version and decided to keep updating that only instead of bringing out a new version.

Google could have renamed Hangouts to either Allo or Duo and integrated those features in Hangouts. Actually, that wouldn't have been impossible for Google either.
