Bobthearch I'd argue that the depth of field and focal length are not major aspects of the content, merely tools you can use in different ways. Shutter speed is the same. It can be limiting not to be able to modify them freely but you get plenty more other options with this camera compared to a mirrorless or DSLR. This is a little demagogue to state. You can archive superb compositions with this camera the same way as with professional ones, you just have less options for focal lengths. Also, what you find important in image quality is subjective. For me, it's dynamic range and colors mostly which this camera does great and couldn't care less about noise or sharpness which has almost zero effect on the content.
Also, Price is not bad at all since you get a pocket computer too with it. Lack of zoom, well, I never use zooms anyway. If you know what you're doing you can still get decent quality out of modern cell phones. Besides, you are making this assumption that a cell phone is an all or nothing thing. Guess what, people like me who enjoy shooting with a high end phone also own real camera gear. The step up in quality from say a Mate 20 Pro is not worth carrying around the camera. If I have to carry a camera it will be my FF setup. Some models even offer minimal user control over aperture and shutter speed.
If it WERE, this wouldn't even be a discussion. The Canon Powershot happens to weight grams 4. Oddly the Powershot has a zoom lens, higher camera resolution, removable battery, expandable memory, physical buttons and dials Even the Powershot SX with a 48X zoom only weighs g. To me that's practically weightless. Seriously, if g or g is too much weight to carry, you should see a doctor about necessary lifestyle changes. Triple lens cameras are nice for sure when on the go. It's nice to have a range of native options on the phones vs having to buy an external lens solution. LG has the worst resale value on the market.
So if you like this phone, wait until summer and you might be able to get it for half off. LG is less popular as a phone brand and the deep discounts on their flagships reflect that. Some are claiming that their smartphone has better image quality that their newly bought ILC cheap ones like Canon M etc. They are partly right: The smartphone is putting some heavy image processing in no time on the picture and it looks great on Facebook or instagram; you have to work on your cameras RAW a bit to achieve this look.
I remember Nokia gave us a neutral image look on the Nokia N8 and I hated it. My old Sony Z2 was much better than this. It had details and nice edges, even when pixel-peeped. Then Sony went backwards with the software and the Z5 was terrible. This LG is not so great either. Oversharpened and mushy, no details. If someone is glad about this quality, it is a good thing he is changing his job. How it is possible to be content these photos if someone is a photograph? There are a number of people, the vast majority in fact, who have no interest in creative control and care very little about image quality. I understand that, and without any grudge.

Ultrawide is a must for any interior, architecture shots.. For travellers this is the best camera configuration in a phone. I am really enjoying using my LG G7 thinQ. I can only imagine this one must be better I wish I had something like this in the 80s and 90s. The extra zoom lengths are super useful, and I think that they are correctly chosen. They cover the ultra-wide to normal range, and they are well fitted to casual portraits, landscape, social settings in close confines etc. Especially the ultrawide is surprisingly useful in many situations. Give the modules mechanical IRIS please so I can make sunstarts, or make it realistic enough real time software effect It's like everything old is new again.
It was all small sensors are dead, go big.

Software is being used to make up for the still abysmal performance of tiny cell phone sensors. People keep saying that old cameras were better than this, but it just isn't true at all. I use my phone for situations that I wouldn't even dream of bringing the Canon S90 that I had. That thing was unusable indoors for example. The multi-frame computational images that are nearly ubiquitous in today's smartphones frequently beat out the single frame images from even modern small-sensor compacts.
The point I was trying to make is that it's not so much that sensors have gotten significantly better over the years, but that software is being used to compensate for the still terrible, small sensors found in smartphones. I'd love to see a smartphone with a meaningfully better sensor AND multi-frame computational advantages.
It's pretty clear the sensors are advancing tremendously. The software is also especially in DOF but the software can't do much of the hardware sensors are not picking up the information to begin with. Multi-shot HDR has certainly done wonders to mask the low dynamic range that plagues small sensors. I've not seen anything that hints at massive improvements at the sensor level though. I would love to see a direct comparison between a Canon S and a single, unadulterated shot from a modern smart phone without HDR applied.
I immediately returned my Canon S when I couldn't see any noticeable difference over my iPhone 5s aside from zoom. That was 5 years ago. Sensors arnt any much better but the software allows for taking photos that in difficult lighting will be much easier on a new phone than a compact.
