What’s happened?
Huawei, the second-biggest smartphone maker globally, has a reputation for building flashy, feature-packed Android phones that rival the iPhone and Google's Pixel series. The new Mate 20 Pro, meant to go up against the iPhone XS Max, features on-screen fingerprint recognition, artificial intelligence, and an impressive camera. Huawei said it would continue to deliver security updates for its existing smartphones.
It can do this via the AOSP.

Huawei has a middling track record for delivering the monthly security updates made available by Google, so it is likely users will receive a similar level of service, with security updates delivered at about the same pace. Here is where things get a bit trickier. Huawei will be able to deliver Android version updates via the AOSP, but it will lose early access to the updated versions provided by Google, such as the current beta of Android Q. The firm shipped more than 59m smartphones in the first quarter of — all running Android.
But a smartphone without Google services and apps will be an incredibly hard sell to consumers outside of China. Microsoft will be in a similar position to Google on software supply, except that no material part of Windows 10 is open source.

What has happened? What does that mean? Google services — Google Play and the various Google apps Gmail etc. Huawei's new phone launch has been marked by uncertainty over whether buyers of the flagship Android device will be able to use apps supported by Google, a unit of Silicon Valley giant Alphabet Inc.

Holding the launch in Europe underlines the importance of the region's million consumers to Huawei. It lost five percentage points in market share here following the US ban, even as buyers rallied to its brand at home.

Huawei has been running an online marketing campaign, with the slogan "Rethink Possibilities", recruiting fans to spread the word about the launch. Instead, Huawei will offer its own interface that will allow users to access some Google apps.
Without those, say analysts, consumers won't want the phone -- unless Huawei can find a way to convince them that its features are unmatched and the alternative software offering is stable and easy to use.
