It delivers a grade-A experience and nearly all the specs you demand in a flagship phone for hundreds of dollars less than the Samsung Galaxy S8 , Google Pixel and Apple iPhone 7.
This is the fourth major phone from Chinese phone maker OnePlus, which has earned a reputation for creating cheap, quality Android phones that undercut the competition.
While OnePlus doesn't have the volume or pure brand clout as Samsung, Apple and even Huawei, it has garnered a loyal following through flash sales and word-of-mouth recommendations. The OnePlus 5 excels at serving high-performing hardware, like the latest Snapdragon chipset and an enduring, fast-charging battery. It's also on trend with a dual-lens rear camera that takes artsy portraits and can hold its own against the iPhone 7 Plus.
Introduction
But it doesn't have super-slim bezels or the water-resistant body that so many top-tier phones do. And its price, while still hundreds less than its top-tier competitors, inches closer to them than years past due to its more expensive features. As a result, the phone isn't quite the deal it once was. But, rest assured, the trade-off is more than fair.
Editors' note : This review has been updated on July 12, , with additional benchmark tests. The OnePlus 5 will come in two storage capacity variants both have no expandable storage and you'll need to buy direct and unlocked since it's not available through major carriers. There will be an online " early drop sale " the day of its announcement on June Finally, on June 27, the device will be available globally on its site for open online purchase.
[Updated] It’s Time to Stop Buying Phones from OnePlus
The OnePlus 5 hopped aboard the dual-camera trend and has two rear shooters. Unlike other phones that have two cameras for wide-angle or monochrome purposes, the phone has a standard megapixel shooter and a secondary megapixel telephoto lens. This enables it to take "bokeh" images that have a shallow depth of field and blurred backgrounds as if you took the photo with an DSLR camera.
The effect turns my run-of-the-mill photos of my friends into something more artsy and dramatic, and it works the same way the 7 Plus' cameras do. You need to stand feet away from your subject to use the effect, and there were times when the camera didn't recognize or "catch" the subject initially. But when it worked, my pictures looked great. Due to its longer focal length, the telephoto lens has a fixed optical 1.
The effect doesn't always work perfectly every time on both the OnePlus and the iPhone. It can be patchy around objects with tricky outlines like with stray hairs and such. But the iPhone did a slightly better job at reading these situations and determining where best the blurring should start and end. The iPhone's bokeh effect also looked softer and more natural at times. In some of the OnePlus' portraits, the foreground looked too harshly contrasted with the blurred background, and the effect looked too digitally rendered.
The OnePlus 5 takes excellent low-light pictures, better even than the pricier Pixel at times. That's due to a combination of better processing technology from OnePlus and a slightly wider aperture f1. The big addition is the new slim-bezel front design.
The OnePlus 5 shipped with a 5. The bigger display in the same size body makes the OnePlus 5T feel like a major upgrade over the previous device. This new release looks more modern and makes better use of the front space. OnePlus seems to bump up the price of its phone every year. It's still a "p" display, but this is a bit taller than the usual aspect ratio.
The display is built by Samsung, which is basically the only company that makes high-quality OLED panels for smartphones.
Best mobile phone deals and contracts in March 2020
The display looks great even in low lighting, and it doesn't have any of the weird artifacts present in the LG-made OLED panels that have been popping up lately. Plus, at "only" p, you should have slightly better battery life. In the upgrade from the 5 to the 5T, OnePlus has also fixed a strange scrolling effect that occurred in some devices; the community dubbed this " jelly scrolling.
This led to a funky, intermittent scrolling behavior that would somehow make UI components squish and stretch as you scrolled the screen. This year, the screen is mounted the right way, and the scrolling should be normal again. To make room for the larger display, OnePlus is finally changing from capacitive navigation buttons that live below the screen to on-screen buttons drawn by the software. OnePlus' old hardware buttons could have their functionality swapped around, but that also meant the buttons were totally unlabeled, which often got confusing.
You can still swap the software buttons around, but now the labels move, too. Switching to a slim bezel design means moving the fingerprint reader, so now you get a big, round fingerprint sensor on the back just like on a Google or LG phone. It's made out of ceramic, and I found it to be fast and accurate. The back still looks too much like an iPhone 7 Plus knockoff for our liking, although that is diminished somewhat with the relocation of the fingerprint sensor.
The phone has an aluminum unibody, and the back is made completely out of anodized aluminum, save for the antenna bands on the top and bottom of the phone. A metal back is increasingly becoming a rarity as easier RF engineering and wireless charging pushes more and more manufacturers toward making all-glass phones. The one downside is that you don't get wireless charging, but that still always seems slow, finicky, and obsolete now that we have the reversible USB-C plug with super-fast wireless charging.
Design and build quality
When you're using a "Dash" charger, the power management circuitry in the phone turns off, and the charging setup does power conversion in the power brick. This means the brick gets hot instead of the phone, allowing the phone to charge optimally. This also really helps if you're trying to use the phone while it's charging, since a hot phone equals a slow phone. On the audio front there's a single, bottom-firing speaker that actually sounds pretty good.
It's loud, clear, and better than you'd expect it to be. There's also a 3. Still, there are a few items on the phone that fall in the "indifferent" category. OnePlus is again including its three-way hardware silence switch. You can slide between "silent," "do not disturb," which is just Android's "Priority" mode, where you can choose which apps or people can make noise in this mode , and "Off.
OnePlus also developed its own version of "Face unlock," a feature Android has had since Obviously this is aimed at the iPhone X, which ships with a fancy 3D face recognition system, but OnePlus is only using the front facing camera for facial recognition. OnePlus admits that this feature is mainly for "ease of access" and isn't as secure as a fingerprint sensor. It is very fast at times—if the phone is aimed right, and if the phone is in a good mood, you won't even see the lock screen when you turn it on.
When even OnePlus won't vouch for the security of the feature, though, I'm not sure if I should be impressed or alarmed by such speed. If you want some legit hardware complaints: the phone isn't waterproof, and there's no expandable storage. That's about it, really. OnePlus has simply made one of the best phones of from a hardware perspective. The OnePlus 5 was already great hardware for the price, but with the new design, the OnePlus 5T is great hardware at any price. OnePlus' software package—called "Oxygen OS"—should be the blueprint for what "customizing Android" means.
OnePlus sticks to the same "Material Design" aesthetic that Android, the Google apps, and third-party apps all follow, but the company adds its own features and options. This is a much better approach than what you get on a Samsung or LG, as both companies re-skin the entire OS to look like a totally different beast.
