It won't keep your audio or the audio from Google Assistant should you decide to answer. If you don't have these options, make sure your Pixel doesn't have any pending software updates and that the Phone app is up to date in the Play Store. If you don't have the new automatic call screening feature yet or have a non-Pixel phone, you can still adjust how Call Screen will work. You'll be able to change the Google Assistant voice that answers your calls, as well as see a demo of how the feature works.
Call Screen uses Google Assistant to monitor the call. Just as Assistant transcribes your requests, it also transcribes incoming calls. At no time during the call is any information sent to Google's servers -- it's all handled on your phone. Each time you tell Google Assistant to do something like send a message or play music, Google stores a recording of the audio in your Google account. At launch, there was no way to view previous transcripts, but toward the end of Google added the ability to view Call Screen transcripts.

The faster refresh rate is a welcome addition that has been making its way to phones like the iPhone 11 Pro and the OnePlus 7 Pro , and kicks into gear when gaming or scrolling through social media sites like Instagram. Interestingly, it has been discovered that the feature only remains on when screen brightness is set above 75 percent. You can force it to remain on in the developer settings, though your battery life will likely take a hit.
It's like True Tone on the iPhone 11 Pro and makes adjustments to the display automatically, depending on lighting and other environmental factors. Ambient EQ is subtle, but you might notice less eye fatigue if you're using your phone for extended periods of time. Durability is on par with other flagships. The Pixel 4 is constructed primarily out of Gorilla Glass 5, so it's tough, but can still be damaged by a hard fall. It has an IP68 waterproof rating , so you don't have to worry about using it in the rain or dropping it in the sink.
That said, we recommend a good case for any phone you plan on using for an extended period of time. Google has managed to make its Pixel lineup the gold standard for smartphone cameras, and the Pixel 4 is no exception. In addition to adding a telephoto lens, there are significant software tweaks that add up to the best camera phone setup we've seen. On the back of the Pixel 4, you'll find the new square camera stack that houses two sensors. The primary lens comes in at The Pixel 4 is also the first phone to carry the Pixel Neural Core; it's similar to the Pixel Visual Core found on older Google handsets, but is more sophisticated and can complete a wider range of tasks.
It also handles many of the AI features like voice transcription and AR. The most significant software improvements happen in Night Sight, Google's low-light imaging software. In addition to algorithm tweaks that enhance color accuracy and composition, a new feature called Astrophotography uses long exposures to capture images of the night sky, stars, and planets. Huawei introduced a similar feature earlier this year on the P30 Pro , but we've yet to compare the two side by side.
The process takes up to four minutes and requires the phone to remain perfectly still for the best shot.
Google Pixel 4 - Manage Data Usage
It should come as no surprise that photos taken with the rear cameras on the Pixel 4 are stunning. We tested the camera in both daylight and low-light settings, and all of our test photos look crisp, without a hint of noise. Photos with Night Sight are also gorgeous, if a little oversaturated. While all three pictures are excellent, there are a few subtle differences you can see when viewing the images at full size. The most noticeable change between the photos is easy to spot when you know the monument photos were taken on a very cloudy day. We also noticed the background gets slightly blurry on the images taken by the iPhone and Note, while the Pixel remains crisp.
Comparing telephoto lenses is a little more complicated. In terms of foreground and background detail, as well as depth of field, the differences between the three are nearly indistinguishable. All three phones also perform well in low light, though the Pixel 4 takes a slight lead over the iPhone. In our test shot, both the Pixel 4 and iPhone do an excellent job, but there's slightly less background blurring in the Pixel test photo.
Like the rear cameras, the selfie cam on the Pixel 4 produces stunning images. In sunlight, all three phones perform equally well in both regular and portrait modes, with the only differences being slight changes in color. When it comes to low-light selfies, however, the Pixel 4 takes a slight lead. With Night Sight enabled, selfies on the Pixel 4 are better lit and provide more detail, though there is lots of noise when viewed full-size. The iPhone 11 Pro comes in last here, with dark and muddy images and too much noise. You cannot add external storage via a microSD card.

It's disappointing, to say the least, that Google continues to offer such paltry storage options, especially since the company discontinued offering three years of cloud photo storage to Pixel owners. See How We Test Phones. We used thes phone for several days, and they handled every task with ease. And thanks to Smooth Display, gameplay is an absolute delight.

We played Asphalt 8 for over an hour, and screen transitions were quick, with absolutely no lag or skipped frames. For some reason, most of our usual benchmark apps are currently unusable on the phones.
We'll report back with benchmark scores if and when we can run the tests, but we expect it to show similar results to other Snapdragon devices. A 2,mAh battery powers the Pixel 4. That's a little smaller than the 2,mAh battery in the Pixel 3, but you're unlikely to notice a difference since the Snapdragon chipset and Android 10 are more power-efficient than their predecessors. In our battery drain test, which streams HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the phone managed to last for 10 hours and 2 minutes, a substantial increase over the Pixel 3 7 hours, 57 minutes.
The Pixel 4 XL, meanwhile, packs a 3,mAh battery. That's a small bump compared with the 3,mAh cell in the Pixel 3 XL , but it managed to last 12 hours, 3 minutes in testing, a significant increase over the Pixel 3 XL's 8 hours, 10 minutes. While our battery tests provide an objective measure for comparing different phones, it's also important to see how they fare with regular, daily usage.
In these tests, we found the Pixel 4 to last just over 6 hours, while the Pixel 4 XL came closer to 7. We think the discrepency between these results and our video streaming numbers are likely due to more AI tasks being processed on the phone in regular usage with the Neural Core chip.
If you find yourself running low on juice before the day is over, the Pixels supports Qi wireless charging, as well as quick charging with the included 18W adapter. Call quality is acceptable. During our tests, we made more than a dozen calls from different areas throughout the city and noticed some interference here and there. Noise reduction works well enough, though we did hear a hint of background noise in a few calls.
When streaming multimedia, the Pixel 4's stereo speakers top out at 90dB and offer crisp, clean sound. Peak earpiece volume comes in at 76dB, which is loud enough to hear in most situations. The same goes for the speakerphone, which peaks at 80dB. These results were the same across both phone sizes.
The phone ships with Android 10 and a custom Pixel UI. It's a near-stock version of Android 10 featuring updated navigation gestures, improved Digital Wellbeing features, and new privacy settings that provide more information about apps and services using your data. Call Screen, an invaluable feature that can screen unknown or unwanted calls, is largely the same on the Pixel 4. The most significant change is under the hood. Thanks to the Pixel Neural Core, transcriptions now happen on-device instead of in the cloud, so responses appear more quickly and remain on the phone.
Live Caption is a notable feature making its debut on the Pixel 4, though it will be available to more phones in the coming months. It transcribes video and audio instantaneously and display it on your screen. In testing, we found it works well with scripted television and radio broadcasts, but tends to struggle with podcasts where there may be more cross talk.
