The best smartphone locate software Google Pixel 4

Google says it's working on a fix that will prevent the phone from unlocking when your eyes are closed, which should be available in the coming months. If you often find yourself attempting to take photos in dark scenarios — like a dimly lit bar or restaurant — then you'll probably be impressed with the Pixel's Night Sight. During my side-by-side testing , I found that the Pixel 4 outperformed the iPhone 11 Pro's night mode in most scenarios, especially when shooting outdoors in the evening. In general, the Pixel 4 felt as if it was able to focus more quickly in the dark, and it produced images that were in some cases brighter and sharper than the iPhone's.

That being said, Night Sight is also available on older phones like the Pixel 3, the less expensive Pixel 3a, and the Pixel 2.

Google Pixel 4 XL review: The big picture

So if you already have an older Pixel device, you don't need to upgrade to take advantage of that functionality. Still, Google has made some improvements to the Pixel 4's camera that are worth acknowledging.

The Pixel 4 now has two main cameras — one The Pixel 3, comparatively, has only one rear camera. With the Pixel 4, you can also adjust highlights and shadows at the same time while shooting, which you can't do on the Pixel 3. Google's Pixel phones run on a clean version of Android that doesn't add any unnecessary extras to the user interface, making it feel slick and easy to use.

That has always been the case with Google's smartphones, even dating back to the Nexus line from years ago. While Samsung has improved its software to make it feel simpler and easier to use compared with older devices, it's still not quite as simple as Google's software. The information in Google's feed is more in line with my tastes and preferences and is usually more specific to my interests. That's probably because Google has the advantage of knowing my search tendencies, but it's still useful nonetheless.

If you're anything like me and prefer using your phone without a case, you'll appreciate the Pixel 4's matte edges. This design choice on Google's part makes it much easier to grip the phone without dropping it if you're not using a case — especially considering the black model I've been testing has a glossy back that can feel slippery. The Pixel 4 may not best rivals like Samsung when it comes to design — after all, the Galaxy S10's curved edges and all-screen front make it look more elegant than most other devices.

But the matte grip feels like a practical addition that could prevent accidental drops and slips. I don't ever find myself using Motion Sense to skip through songs or otherwise manipulate the phone hands-free. But I have found another use that feels helpful and practical: automatically lowering the volume of my alarm. Because the Pixel 4 can tell when you're reaching for your phone, it can proactively decrease your alarm as you extend your hand toward the device.

Since I'm usually scrambling to grab my phone and turn down the volume when my alarm blares each morning, I found this to be a valuable addition. It's features like this that make me interested in what else Google plans to do with Motion Sense in the future. While many camera upgrades on smartphones have seemed incremental in recent years, the addition of an ultra-wide-angle camera has felt like a more significant step forward — much like night mode and portrait mode.

It makes it possible to capture photos with a significantly wider field of view without having to step backward or coerce people to squeeze together to fit in the frame. That's why it was disappointing to learn that the Pixel 4 would not have an ultra-wide-angle camera, with Google instead opting for a telephoto zoom lens. In my daily experience, I usually find myself taking advantage of the iPhone's ultra-wide-angle lens more often than its telephoto lens, since I'm typically snapping photos of broad scenes rather than a subject that's too far away.

Google Pixel 4 review: the best Pixel yet might not be good enough

With the Pixel 4 , I was typically able to get through an entire day without scrambling for a charger. While that's certainly acceptable, I'm used to getting much more out of other flagship smartphones like the iPhone 11 Pro and even the cheaper Pixel 3a XL. The iPhone 11 Pro lasted me for a day and a half when I reviewed it last month, while the less expensive iPhone 11 was on pace to last for more than a full day. If you don't already own a pair of USB-C headphones or wireless earbuds, you may be out of luck when it comes to listening to music on the Pixel 4. Google's new phone doesn't come with earbuds or an adapter for plugging your 3.

That seemed like an odd choice considering rivals like Apple and Samsung include headphones in the box. The Pixel 4 continues to deliver on the camera quality that's come to be expected from a Pixel phone, especially when it comes to shooting in the dark. Plus, the Pixel still offers the best software experience of any Android phone, particularly because it's simple and has Google's intelligence baked in.

Pixel 4 is here to help

The face scanner is one reason the top bezel is so large; the other is Motion Sense, which utilises a tiny radar packed into the phone to allow you to skip songs, silence songs and more with a wave of your hand. We've seen this before in various guises from other manufacturers, and while Google's implementation works pretty well, it's not perfect — and we can't really imagine using it very much.

What we can imagine using is the Recorder app, exclusive to the Pixel 4, which transcribes spoken audio in real-time as you record — perfect for interviews, meetings, and lectures. You can search through your notes with ease, and even run searches for "applause" or "music" Google can recognise those too. The Recorder app works offline if needed, as Google has managed to embed some machine-learning artificial intelligence trickery on the device itself.

Speaking of AI, Google Assistant gets better yet again, and should now be able to respond to queries more quickly and with less reliance on the cloud. The rest of the specs of the Google Pixel 4 are rather average — or at least average for a flagship Android phone in Specs aren't everything, of course — Apple's iPhones famously get by on less RAM thanks to the software optimisations going on behind the scenes — but they are something. In just about every category you can find a phone that's beaten the Pixel 4 this year, which isn't a good look for a flagship launching after everyone else has had their go.

The Pixel 4 is fully waterproof and dustproof, with an IP68 rating which means it can survive for up to 30 minutes in water at a depth of up to 1. Wireless charging and fast charging are here again, as last year, and you can use the same Pixel Stand that launched alongside the Pixel 3 to turn your phone into a nightstand display. You've got USB-C or Bluetooth for audio, because the headphone jack is gone for good, and the phone also offers a good-quality pair of stereo speakers. They're fine for gaming, podcasts and movies, and at a push, they'll do for music as well.

The Pixel 4's design is unimpressive, but that's because it's useful.

One important benefit of the Pixel range so far has been unlimited Google Photo uploads at the original quality — unfortunately that ends with the Google Pixel 4. The likes of Samsung, Apple and OnePlus have made substantial steps forward with their handsets this year. Google has also made progress with the Pixel 4, in terms of the camera, Motion Sense, Face Unlock and integrated AI — but there are some misses among the hits as well, which you should bear in mind if you're thinking about picking one up.

Squandered advantages

When it comes to the hardware design, and the internal components, and the battery life, the Pixel 4 is not much more than satisfactory. If Google wants to appeal to power users it needs to go further than a maximum of GB of internal storage and no memory card support, for example. Yes, it's the best Pixel yet, but the improvements aren't big enough in comparison to the rest of the field — it feels as though Google has lost ground this year. The Pixel 4 still takes stellar photos, and the on-board AI including Google Assistant remains the gold standard that everyone else needs to beat The reasons to buy a Pixel phone are the same as ever with the Pixel 4 — that pure Android experience, the power of Google Assistant, and the magic that Google can do with photos including astrophotography, this year.

The Pixel 4 adds some nice touches as well, like Face Unlock and the Recorder app. Most of this is the AI and software at work though — and it feels as though the hardware side is less of a priority for Google.
